(Answer) (Category) FreeSurfer Faq-O-Matic : (Category) Troubleshooting :
tksurfer (surface viewing) or tkmedit (volume viewing) doesn't start.
If tksurfer doesn't start (either from csurf or from the command line) and you see an error message about a window type being unsupported in the shell output, you are probably having trouble with your video card or graphics libraries setup. tkmedit will exhibit similar behavior for the same problem.

Make sure your OpenGL libraries are installed correctly and the GL test programs work. If your video card is not a fairly recent nVidia or ATI card, it may not be supported properly. We test our software internally on nVidia cards, and most other cards work, but we can't test everything.

If it still doesn't work, try the statically linked version of the binary in question: tkmedit.static or tksurfer.static. This should be a simple substitution from the command line; if you with to use it in csurf, you can rename the regular binary to a different name and create a symlink with the normal name to the static version, i.e. rename tksurfer to tksurfer.dynamic and create a symlink called tksurfer to tksurfer.static.

The static version should work for all systems, but will be slower, as it doesn't try to link in your specific system's accelerated GL libraries. If it doesn't work, there is something else wrong with your setup.
